Soil fertility fund

The soil fertility fund of the Bio-Foundation supports land managers to maintain and increase the soil fertility on farmland. At the same time its aim is to increase the awareness of the importance of soil fertility in society.

Fertile soil is the basis of all life: It provides a habitat for many animals and plants, provides valuable food and protects climate as CO2 storage. But due to incorrect farming practices and urbanization healthy soil dissapears every day.

In organic and biodynamic farming experiences were collected over decades, methods developed and actions carried out, to built up and maintain the soil fertility. But these measures are labor intensive and expensive.
The soil fertility Fund aims to create a free space, which allows land managers to improve their handling of the soil and to select effective measures for the protection of soil fertility at their fields. In addition to the financial support they could consult soil fertility experts financed by the soil fertility Fund.

In a first project phase a pilot project will be carried out in the region of the Lake of Constance for a period of three years covering an area of approximately 1,000 hectares. The participating companies are to be based in Switzerland, Germany, Austria or Liechtenstein.

The Bio-Foundation supports the project by funding a soil expert who is currently selecting the companies of the pilot phase and will accompany the project professionally.
